Magic Suppression Empty Magic Suppression

Post  seraph787 Sat Aug 27, 2011 8:58 pm

One of the unfortunate side effects of the Animus Wars was magic suppression.

As a result, casters (of all types, divine, arcane, so on and so forth) are subject to a spell failure rate as well as weakened outcomes of their spells. Those who are not attuned to magic suffer weakened effects from magical items they wield. Casters, however, are attuned to magic and so can access the full power of magic items.

The following are the general rules for casters casting spells:
  • For each spell level of the spell being cast, there is a 10% chance for the spell to fail. Thus a cantrip (0 level spell) has a 0% chance to fail whereas a 4th level spell has a 40% chance to fail.
  • Furthermore, spells that succeed are still weakened. This applies to all spells 3rd level and higher.
NOTE: Anything that causes a spells level to be raised (such as a metamagic effect) will also cause the spell to be treated as a higher level spell for Magic Suppression purposes.
  • All damaging spells do 10% less damage.
  • All enhancement spells (+2 to AGI) are only 50% effective, rounding in favor of a gain in stats.
  • Class abilities that function magically or supernaturally are unaffected by this.
  • Spells that increase your speed suffer a 20% reduction in speed, rounding to the nearest 5 foot interval.
  • Spells that make a weapon magic and +1, +2, +3 are affected in the following ways: You gain the additional attack hit bonus but not the additional damage.
More on this at a later date.

Magic items for noncasters are weakened:
  • A magic weapon does not gain the additional attack hit bonus but does gain the additional damage. (Note: this is the opposite of the spells cast by spellcasters). For the purpose of overcoming damage reduction/magic (for instance) an item will have a 50% chance to overcome DR/magic. (This is not the case for spells cast by casters).
  • Items that increase your ability scores are only 50% effective, rounding in favor of gaining stats.
  • Items that increase your speed suffer a 20% reduction in speed, rounding to the nearest 5 foot interval.

There are similarities and there are differences between the weaknesses.

Pets or summoned monsters who cast spells are also affected by these limitations.

As you journey around the world, you will find some places are more or less devoid of magic and your spells and items will be affected in different ways. These places are few and far between.
